My date with a thirteen year-old.

Boyfriend has a little brother who is fourteen years younger than he (Boyfriend is 27). We’ll call him DJ. He is oh-so-cute. He’s also a brat and hit the “teenage” patch in his attitude one weekend when he was newly turned 12. No joke. He went from this little, content thing to a punk-ass in one weekend. However, I still love him, and here is a lovely list of why:

  1. When Boyfriend and I started dating, he was 10. One night I tucked him in to bed the way my mom did: You push in the blankets around their whole body like your making a bed. The rest of the summer he only let me tuck him in.
  2. He appropriately uses the phrase”Your mom”.
  3. He lets us tease the crap out of him about girls.
  4. He has the coolest cat who loves him so much. She follows him around all day and freaks out when he’s gone.
  5. He knows more football stats then most grown men.
  6. He hates reading. But a few weeks ago, he came home while I was visiting and curled up on the couch with me for 45 minutes to read.
  7. He, for some unknown reason, thinks Boyfriend and I are awesome. He can’t wait to spend the weekend up here and when we go out to eat he “calls” sitting next to one of us.
Over Christmas break, we went on a date day. (You should have seen him roll his eyes when I called it a date day.) To start, I told him he could pick any place to go to breakfast. And he is wonderful because he chose breakfast burritos from the most glorious Mexican food whole-in-the wall.
Freaking yum. I swear I would eat breakfast burritos every morning of my life.
Then, we went to Costco for this book. 501 Must-Read Books. I LOVE this book. And I have wanted it since I saw it. All the books are organized by genre; children’s lit, modern fiction, history, memoirs etc. Then each page has a book with a synopsis and some context/history of the book. Oh! AND they are not exclusively western European. The books are from all over the place. I decided that I really want to read every book in here. Which boyfriend points out that even if I read a book a week, it would take me 10 years…. but its a good goal. I also figure that if I only read 50% of the books in here, I will be a more interesting person. Anyhow, after we bought the book, I let DJ pick a book. He picked this one, because there was a dog on the cover…
I plan on reviewing these books as I read them.
Then, we went to the mall to exercise a puppy. Then we went to see “Marley and Me” (Wherein I cried like a baby). We did the works at the movies, snacks and soda followed by Cold Stone Ice Cream to sufficiently ruin our dinner.

The entire day DJ just kept telling me I was weird. We chatted, I thought of random things to say,but it wasn’t super exciting. I even lectured him about the importance of doing better in school (He’s kind of a slacker). I thought he was totally bored.

But then, that night when we were talking about our day with his parents; he was asked how our date day rated on a scale from 1 to 10. I told him 1 was shopping for granite ALL day with his parents and a 10 was going to Six Flags with a friend without parents.

And do you want to know what he said?

8.5!!

DJ, a bratty 13 year-old rated a day out with me an 8.5. Who knew I was so cool. It was truly awesome.

I’m so glad he puts up with me.

Weekly Menu #1

Before last quarter I had become relatively good at planning out menus each Sunday. It is the only way to work and be busy, and not spend a million dollars on eating out. You know, it’s one of those “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail” things.

For breakfast, we eat oatmeal in our respective offices. For lunch, we make 4 sandwiches Sunday night and stick them in the crisper drawer. This way, we can just quickly grab a sandwich on our way out the door. We let ourselves have lunch out once a week, because its yummy :).

So, this weeks menu:

Fettuccine with Clam Sauce

Crock Pot Pot Roast-I am such a fan of crock pot recipes… they’re so easy and usually so yummy.

Crock Pot Beef Burgandy– This is one of boyfriends favorite, and I have never made it. You know, because I’ve always been a little nervous about messing it up. :)

Rachel Ray’s “Brad’s Burgers” – These are SO good! They have a little bit of everything, so they come out so juicy and flavorful. We know likely because I basically never repeat recipes unless I super love them, and this I make all the time.

New Years Cleaning.

Today, we (well, mostly I) have been cleaning and purging our apartment. Our apartment is tiny. Ridiculously tiny. Here is a picture.
It’s 570 square feet. Please notice the storage space. There is basically none. The kitchen has two drawers. It’s ridiculous.

Anyhow, having a small space such as this requires fairly regular purging. We are best friends with Goodwill, because if I haven’t used it in 6 months, I do not have space to store it.

I am trying to made my own household cleaning items. So I concocted my spray bottles of vinegar/water and bleach/water. Using bleach still make me nervous though because God knows Oliver will lick something and get sick. So I have mostly been using my Clorox Green Purpose Spray. And I LOVE it. I like the smell. It cuts through the grossest, grimiest buildup on my ALL FREAKING WHITE kitchen. And Oliver could lick it and not die.

Vacation.

Vacation has been soooo nice. And I have lots of stories, and categorized them while doing them to write about. I will hopefully write about them this weekend. So, there’s that. But tonight, I bring you two subjects: New Year’s and Anniversary Love.

Ryan and I had our first kiss at midnight three (!) years ago. This has made it so New Year’s is especially nice and on our actual anniversary of January 1st (Cause out first kiss was 12:00:01) we don’t have to work. So, we cuddle and drink the mandatory bottle of champagne straight from the bottle. :0)

Three years. That seems like a long time, but it has been insanely easy. This man, is the kindest, smartest, funniest man I have ever met. Truly. We both have very easy going personalities, we do not fight, we have the same expectations for most everything (From this weekend, to children, to everything). It is so much fun to plan our future. He deals with my crazy and sings to me all the time. He is a dork (through and through) which allows me to be a dork too. He is completely supportive and encouraging. He thinks I am cutest while doing my very favorite thing (curled up reading on the couch). He really like my cooking and baking. And when he comes into a room, sometimes he drops everything in his hands to dramatically rush over to hug me like we have been separated a longer period then five minutes.
I love you Sweets!
New Years:

My primary resolution is to take more pictures and chronicle them here. Maybe even let some more people know about this blog…. IDK, I want to look back on this next year and remember everything.

This year. I would like to do more things that satisfy my soul. I will read more. Spend more time with dear friends. Take random trips to absolutely no where.

2009 brings a lot of things. Ryan and I are planning on getting a condo in June. I graduate in June. Ryan starts a NEW JOB on Monday. We’re so excited. 2009 is going to be AMAZING.

Merry Christmas.

Christmas was scaled back this year. But still full of the important things. It was our first year without Boyfriend’s sister and her husband here, which was sad. But next year there will be baby nephew, which will add so much excitement to Christmas morning.

Hope Everyone Christmas was full of peace and naps and loved ones.
